FRIDAY COMMISSIONED ARTISTS FRIDAY AUCTION ITEMS

Dean Hanmer - FL-39
Minneapolis native, Hanmer creates constructed assemblages. “Art for me is marking sacred space,” he said. “Each piece is a prayer.” Hanmer’s commissioned piece, “Red, White & Blue,” incorporates a cement base sculpture intricately tiled with oblong slate pieces, bits of ceramics and several painted icons of Hanmer’s America; Reno, three American Presidents and a miniature scene of the Revolutionary War. “Slate is my main material. I also use bits of pottery, glass, marbles, anything that catches my interest. I want people to get sucked in; I want people to look for the mystery in it, engage their minds.”

Brian Fisher - FL-48
Brian Fisher’s monoprints retell Greek myths, especially the political and dramatic ones, with intensity, accuracy and beauty. His commissioned artwork, “Clew,” for auction Friday night, tells the story of Minotaur’s end, in Fisher’s signature bold lines. Fisher has lived on Vashon 18 years. He earned a BA in Interior Architecture and was inspired by Ilse Reimnitz to join Quartermaster Press nearly a decade ago. “I continue to be confounded by and delighted with the variety of texture and imagery made possible through the manipulation of these simple materials,” he said.

Mike Urban - FL-54
As a child he imagined himself an archeologist exploring the beaches of Vashon. He collected Native American arrowheads and bones of seals, herons and seagulls. Mike Urban, also an award winning photographer, still finds himself connecting to his childhood dreams through his sculpture. And so his “Xiphactinus” was born, made from “70 some odd lawnmower blades, 40 pairs of hedge trimmers, half a dozen or more hay scythe blades, a few brush axes, and several hand saws. The head is made from an old storage tank, nails, rebar, stainless steel, and regular steel.”
