SATURDAY COMMISSIONED ARTISTS SATURDAY AUCTION ART

Terri Fletcher - SL-21
Terri Fletcher’s elegant mixed-media piece “The Jumble” is made of Nepalese paper which she hand dyed using the shibori technique itajime (Japanese tie dye). A textile artist at heart, the core of Fletcher’s works on paper is the dye process which she developed in graduate school. She did her thesis on dyeing paper and collage. Since then she has continued developing her technique. “Part of what I like so much about resist dye technique it that there is the element of surprise. I undo the clamps and there is this moment of Ah-ha! It is fun to start out with that excitement,” she said.

Elaine Hanowell - SL-39
Elaine Hanowell’s lighted sculpture, “Pink Koi with Calligraphy,” is a magical combination of paper and light. “They’re meant to be celebrative and festive--spontaneous; I like to approach everything like that,” says Hanowell of her signature paper, bamboo and slate fish lamps. “I love the materials, the textures and the weight of the paper—they’re beautiful.” Hanowell grew up in Seattle and moved to Vashon in 1980, where she shares 10 bucolic acres with her brother and sister-in-law. Most of her work is informed by her extensive travels throughout Asia.

Karen Hersh-Crozier - SL-52
Hersh-Crozier’s commissioned piece, “The Hidden Paths Emerging” to be auctioned Saturday evening of Art Auction, depicts a golden river running across a rich, earthy-red mountain landscape. “It’s a continuation of some pieces I’ve been doing, inspired by a Daoist mountain that exists in China,” she says. “This piece has pulled me back to what I really love—a communion with nature. My work is beginning to change. The immersion into nature, always changing with tides and light—everyone has a path that feels right and at a certain point things begin to emerge, coalesce, manifest. In this painting, it became clearer to me, a path that was always there. If you’re looking, it becomes evident.”

RAISE THE PADDLE

On each night of the auction guests will be given the opportunity to assist VAA with two important issues:

SCHOLARSHIPS

Vashon Allied Arts is pleased to offer scholarships which provide children and adults the opportunity to participate in our visual and performing arts classes including theatre, music, and dance.

This past year we also increased our support of the Community Scholarship Program and established the Art Hansen Scholarship in honor of this beloved Island treasure. This scholarship was given to a graduating senior preparing for a professional career in the arts.

These scholarships are made possible by the generosity of our donors and with them we provide access to artistic and educational opportunities for Island residents. We appreciate the donors who make these scholarships possible. In 2007 we will allocate nearly $15,000 in support to Island families. We are hopeful that we can continue to do so next year with the help of our donors.

RAISE THE ROOF

The Vashon Allied Arts Board and Staff have been addressing our facility needs this past year. Our first priority has been to identify the repairs needed on our ninety-five year old beloved Blue Heron Art Center building.

We installed curtain drains, but more repairs are needed to resolve some structural issues and make the building watertight.

These include foundation work, roof rafter repair so new gutters and roof can be installed, and painting the building. The cost estimate for this work is approximately $75,000.

Through the generosity of some donors, we have a matching fund challenge which we will announce each evening of the Auction. We hope you will help us “Raise the Roof” so we can all continue to be good stewards of our old historic building.
